Georgia Counties

Parent Counties & Creation Dates

In more than 300 years, Georgia has created 164 counties, and, of those, 159 are in existence and five are not. Houston OLD, Bourbon, and Walton OLD were NOT within the present boundaries of Georgia. Campbell and Marion were merged with Fulton County in 1932 and 1911, respectively. Researching family history in Georgia county records is complicated by the number of counties (more than any state except Texas) and the need to know both when the county was created and whether it was carved out of other existing counties.

CGGS former president Robert Hudson Lear has created this handy reference to the creation dates and parent counties of all Georgia counties. He welcomes feedback, corrections and comments, and can be reached at 4106 Riverside Drive, Brunswick, Georgia 31520, 912-265-5910, or email BackRiver@comcast.net. Last updated: March 14, 2020. You are welcome to redistribute this reference aid or use it however you please, but please retain his contact information on the copy.
